Founded in 1922, Rehabilitation International (RI) developed as a global advocate for disability and rehabilitation. Historically, RI was engaged in the development of the United Nation Convention of the Rights of People with Disabilities (UN-CRPD) and developed the international symbol of accessibility (so-called “wheelchair-symbol”). Today, RI has member organizations in approximately 100 countries all around the globe. It focusses on the implementation of the UNCRPD in all life areas as well as on the availability of high-quality rehabilitation services including assistive technology for all persons in need. RI has six regions and seven commissions (Education, Health & Functioning, Technology & Accessibility, Policy & Services, Leisure, Recreation & Physical Activities, Social Affairs, Work & Employment).
Rehabilitation International is one of the Organizers of the World Congress on Rehabilitation alongside with the International Social Security Alliance (ISSA) and Zayed Higher Organization for People with Determination who is the local host. The congress will be held in Abu Dhabi on September 23-25, 2024. Under the motto “Embracing Inclusion” the main topic of the Congress is work and employment for people with disabilities/of determination. Additionally, a number of other related topics like education, women with disabilities, disaster risk management and assistive technologies are on the program. We cordially invite everyone who I interested in the field, namely persons with disabilities to attend and contribute to this important international event.
Rehabilitation International is interested to collaborate and partner in the field of assistive technology including information technology and artificial intelligence. Our goal is to improve quality and usefulness of all AT by including the user’s perspective into the development and testing process, providing expertise and integration its provision in rehabilitation programs where appropriate.
