Therapy is indispensable at the Dubai Center for Special Needs (DCSN), profoundly impacting students’ physical and mental well-being. Among various therapeutic interventions, physiotherapy particularly stands out for students with mobility challenges, thanks to the exceptional skills and techniques employed by DCSN therapists.
Physiotherapy at DCSN focuses on enhancing physical function, alleviating pain, and improving quality of life. Therapists at DCSN employ advanced techniques and innovative methods to create individualized programs that cater to each student’s unique needs. This personalized approach ensures that students receive the most effective care, facilitating significant physical and psychological improvements.
Lea Maria and Ena exemplify the transformative power of these expert interventions.
Initially wheelchair-bound, both have made remarkable strides since the DCSN team began working with them. Through the implementation of specialized techniques and a dedication to individualized care, the therapists are guiding Lea Maria, Ena and many other students towards achieving the ultimate goal which is independent walking. Their progress reflects their unwavering determination and the superior skills of the DCSN therapy team.
Lea-Maria, diagnosed with Rett syndrome—a rare condition characterized by the gradual loss of learned skills—is defying the typical progression of her condition. With a well-organized and carefully planned therapy regimen, she continues to make significant strides.
She uses an adaptive wheelchair for comfort and support to maintain good posture while moving around the center. Her first major improvement was standing up with the aid of a standing frame. She then progressed to improving her standing tolerance with maximum manual support, advanced to standing while holding onto a wall bar, and further progressed to facilitated walking with maximum manual assistance.
Eventually, she moved on to walking with an assistive device (forearm walker).
The advancements of students at DCSN underscore the critical role of therapy in fostering independence and resilience. The therapists’ exceptional skills and techniques not only enhance physical capabilities but also boost students‹ confidence and sense of achievement. This holistic approach empowers students to overcome challenges and reach their full potential.
